It is regarded as normal for them to weigh up to 120 pounds and grow to at least 32 inches for males and 30 inches tall and 105 pounds for the females. They reach up to seven feet when standing on their hind legs.

This breed has a distinctive square head and a slim body. They have a coarse, hairy coat and lean bushy eyebrows. They usually have a white and grey mixed color coat of medium length, although at times they may have a color combination of tanish brown with reddish tone or even black or brindle tones. However, grey is the most common color. Their paws are large and round with obviously arched toes and strong rounded nails. It has a long head with a reasonably pointed muzzle and a muscular neck. They have well built shoulders with a strong muscular appeal. The chest is deep and has a well drawn in stomach. The tail hangs low with a slight curve. The ears are held back against the head except when it is excited. The hound gives an appearance of being strong and graceful.

A major distinctive feature that these dogs have apart from being the biggest dogs is there capability to see very well. In the olden times, they were bred for wars for this sole purpose. During the Roman times, this particular breed was so feared that people actually put them in lion cages and moved them around. However, times have changed and today this breed is known as a “gentle giant”.

These big dogs mean big money. A fifteen month old pup can cost up to $1200. This particular breed is very popular amongst people. They are soft-tempered, patient, generous, thoughtful, and very intelligent and are wonderful with children and other pets. They give unconditional love and are extremely loyal and friendly by nature hence, can not be kept as a guard dog.

These dogs take long to mature, at least two whole years before they reach their full height. They grow fast and therefore, high quality food is very essential for them. Keep in mind that a growing pup has to be taken on daily walks for its mental wellbeing and so that it gets it daily dose of exercise. It should be taught not to pull on its leash before it gets too strong and should know how to heal on command. The Irish wolfhound may be the biggest dogs but are very easy to train. They respond more to firm but gentle and consistent guidance. The Irish wolfhound has the ability to grasp instructions quickly and attentively.

When it comes to their health and taking proper care of them, you should know that these big dogs are prone to cardiomyapathy, bone cancer, bloat, PRA, Von Willebrands and hip dysplasia. Their life expectancy is about six to eight years. They need to be looked after and groomed regularly with a brush and comb. About once or twice a year, pull at the coat to get out excess dead hair.

This breed is best suited for houses with back yards or a large garden. They are comparatively inactive indoors and would therefore prefer large open spaces. It is advisable not to have these big dogs if you are living in an apartment. They get very attached to their owner and feel the need to be part of the family. Thus, keeping them in a kennel would be ill advised. Since they have a sharp sense of sight they tend to chase after and so it is essential to have a secure and fenced area for their recreational purposes.
