Biggest Dog

Biggest Dog Breed world record!

The biggest dog breed is determined not necessarily by height but by mass. Therefore, the English Mastiff is the biggest dog.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes and temperaments. Dogs can be as tiny as a teacup Chihuahua or as long and lanky as the Greyhound. They can be massive as the English Mastiff or as small and fluffy and the Pomeranian. Whatever size or shape, though, the old adage that a dog is a man’s best friend is true.

Some people prefer the small lap dogs while others prefer larger breeds of dogs. Each has its own advantages. However, how does one determine which breed is the smallest? Or which one is the biggest? In fact, which breeds are the biggest?

Generally agreed upon by dog breeders around the world is the fact that the biggest dog breed is the English Mastiff. But how does one determine exactly which breed is the biggest? The biggest dog breed is determined by size and weight not necessarily height. Typically the English Mastiff weighs in at well over 100 or 200 pounds. On average, the males weigh around 160-230 pounds and the females around 120-190 pounds. Needless to say, these are large dogs. Their massive weight and stance is impressive.

With a massive body, broad skull and head of generally square appearance, the English Mastiff is truly the biggest dog breed. It is one of the largest dog breeds in terms of mass or weight; however the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane are taller though not nearly as robust. Height, though, is not the staple of determining the biggest breed.

The robust size and shape of the English Mastiff makes it appear to be very powerful and the biggest dog. The build, especially between the forelegs, is very wide. Not only is the dog wide, it is also tall. The AKC standard height for the English Mastiff breed is 30 inches (76 centimeters) at the shoulder for males and 27.5 inches (70 centimeters) at the shoulder for females.

The dog to hold the record for the world’s largest dog was Zorba, an English Mastiff breed from England. Zorba weighed over 343 pounds and stood 37 inches tall at the shoulder and was 8.25 feet from his nose to tail. No other dog has beaten his record since 1989.

Some dogs may be taller than the English Mastiff but taller is not necessarily bigger. The biggest dogs usually have more mass than height, though height is also important. The Irish Wolf Hound and Great Dane can be taller then the English Mastiff, but these breeds do not match the mastiff for weight and overall size. The mastiff is also one of the most powerful dogs.

Although Zorba holds the record for the biggest dog, some urban legends claim a Neapolitan Mastiff as the largest biggest dog. However, those claims have not been verified and the email circulating with the picture of this massive beast walking next to his owners and a horse is thought to be a hoax. Typically the Neapolitan Mastiff is smaller than the English Mastiff.

The world’s tallest dog was a Great Dane named Gibson. The Great Dane breed is known for its giant size, but this breed isn’t necessarily the biggest. It is however, one of the tallest breeds. The males tend to weigh 120 pounds or more which is about 50 pounds less than the English Mastiff.

Although the Great Dean and Irish Wolfhounds are large dogs, too, the English Mastiff is the biggest dog on Earth. In fact, the record for the world’s biggest dog is held by an English Mastiff and the whole breed is generally considered to the largest based on its mass.
